ABSTRACT

In this chapter, teachers will judge some actual grant proposal ideas to see if they can pick the winners on their own. They also have the opportunity to identify the flaws in a typical "bad" grant application and to analyze what made a "good" grant application successful. In other words, they will practice looking at grant proposal ideas and reading grant applications the way a grant reviewer would. If teachers are a repeat applicant to some programs, they will eventually get a chance to serve as either a volunteer or paid grant reviewer. This application nicely incorporated science concepts through learning about invasive plants and service through the volunteer work. It fulfilled the STEM-related grant requirement because students were doing environmental service work and learning about invasive plants. The application starts out requesting field trip funding for a purpose that's not very clear.
