ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some definitions of creativity and how it develops from birth onwards. It demonstrates how adults can support children to move from the present situation into one where there are many possibilities. The chapter explores the importance of emotional wellbeing in brain development and subsequent creativity. It discusses the role of imagination and development of 'possibility thinking' and explains the role of the adult as a Creative teacher. Children's creative abilities can be related to their developmental stages. It is important to put the emphasis on the creative process rather than the product or outcome which may result. The Scottish government has identified few core creativity skills which apply across the curriculum. Creativity is at the heart of the Scottish curriculum and is fundamental to the definition of what it means to be a 'successful learner' in the Scottish education system.
