ABSTRACT
This chapter situates fantasy as a phenomenon and a concept in the contemporary Western cultural context through providing a historical and cultural background to the study of fantasy. More specifically, the chapter provides a brief historical overview of discourses on the topic of fantasy, a discussion of the relationship between fantasy and reality, a summary of perspectives on the role of belief in fantasy, as well as an overview of the central approaches and concepts through which fantasy has been researched.
