ABSTRACT

When children are displaying deep levels of involvement there is increased brain activity and synapse formation. Deep-level involvement is seen when children have autonomy and genuine choice. The adult will be considering whether they can add anything in that moment to benefit the child. For some, the image of “play” might then need to shift. “Play” should be viewed as anything that delivers deep involvement for a particular child. As each child is unique, so too is their play. Every child wants to be deeply involved and each will achieve this in their own unique way. In a setting, if the majority of children are displaying deep levels of involvement for the majority of the time, then we know that deep-level learning is happening.
