ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the tested methods to help children with attention difficulties perform better in school. It considers some behavioral techniques and then goes over the pros and cons of drugs for remediation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). For many children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, both behavioral techniques and medicine for the difficulty have helped at different times and in different situations. Although it is true that some of the more severe cases of ADHD are sometimes prescribed drugs to help children concentrate, a lot of the best approaches involve behavioral techniques to encourage children to stay on task. Sally, a parent of a child with ADHD, says something similar: Learning comes in all shapes and sizes. In order to help those with ADHD to keep track of time, consider making use of timers, counters, clocks, phones, or other devices.
