ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the keyconcepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the process of defining a role for education primarily in the service of poverty reduction and economic growth, and promotes critical reflection on a more holistic role for education in, through, and for sustainable development. It shows how education can contribute to other goals of sustainable development, not how 'more of the same schooling' does. The book provides an account of linkages between education and other development sectors that comes closer to being comprehensive than the limited number and range of illustrative examples to which existing reviews have restricted themselves. It examines the role of education in relation to these '5 Ps' –people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. In 2015, Heads of State and Government and High Representatives from around the world committed to a new sustainable development agenda in the form of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 accompanying targets.
