ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the current global governance regime of sustainable development, and considers the concepts of political will, capacity, and cooperation. It addresses the global partnership in the realm of the international Education For All (EFA) agenda. The chapter examines the concept of human rights and sustainable development in and through education. EFA movement was officially launched with the first WCEFA held in Jomtien, Thailand, an event convened by UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). As education is strongly associated with children and childhood in the public discourse, it is important to also consider the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and how it relates to education. The chapter explores the idea of human rights and sustainable development in and through education, which highlighted a number of promising approaches to education for human rights and sustainable development.
