ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces novice researchers to arts-based qualitative research methods. It examines the different ways in which arts-based projects have been approached, the methodological choices available for arts-based projects, and provides examples of the ways in which voice can be explored in arts-based educational research. The book describes the various strategies novice educational researchers can use to engage with the arts. It argues that qualitative researchers need to expand their methodologies to include arts-based approaches to their projects and by doing so reshape their identities as qualitative researchers. The book focuses on the possibilities of integrating and creating comic books and graphic novels within qualitative research projects. It highlights three of them: visual inquiry, narrative inquiry, and performative inquiry. The methodological and pedagogical implications of engaging in arts-based educational research practices.
