ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the notion of emotional intelligence (EI) and practical strategies for developing emotional resilience. The theory of emotional intelligence developed through studies of cognition and affect, more specifically looking at how emotions affect thoughts, and subsequently how thoughts influence behaviours. An understanding of EI provides a basis from which to identify and manage own emotions, as well as those of others, skills that are essential in mentoring relationships. According to L. Grant and G. Kinman emotional resilience might be described as the ability to recover from adversity, to ‘bounce back’ when things become difficult; they stress the importance of using appropriate strategies to do so. Being aware of and open to emotion is just as valid in the workplace as it is within personal lives. The development of emotional literacy within the mentoring relationship provides a forum from which to explore strengths and limitations within a supportive framework.
