ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief outline and discussion of Kress and van Leeuwen's grammar of visual design. It focuses on experiential and interpersonal meaning. The chapter examines the visual-verbal realisation of the meaning of 'PowerPoint'. Since Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar was designed not only for the analysis of photographs but for the analysis of visuals more generally, it can also be applied to drawings and other graphic elements in the novel. In biographies and biographical novels, the occurrence of photographs is not unusual, and the portrait is a prototypical choice. A notably different kind of photograph occurs amongst the extra material following the narrative proper. This is a private photo from a demonstration outside the Home Office in which Stuart participated. In Masters' novel, the photographs primarily appear to have the effect of providing authenticity. To sum up, the three photographs of Stuart contribute biographical authenticity to the novel, signalling that Stuart really existed.
