ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on English for Professional Purposes and English for Occupational Purposes. The relationship between knowledge of a profession or occupation and its specialised vocabulary is very strong. Students need to know the vocabulary of their field well in order to function as professionals. Professional purposes vocabulary is also important because it is needed for communication between professionals and between professionals and laypeople. Vocabulary in Aviation English is very tightly controlled and is divided into phraseology and plain English. Testing language skills of pilots is an important area of research. A feature of Aviation English is the challenging environment for a heavily prescribed specialised vocabulary. Vocabulary in Legal English has a reputation for being particularly difficult and recent growth in international law has increased the need for learning this lexis. Business vocabulary has been investigated in a range of studies, primarily through corpus analysis and focusing on word list development.
