ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the Values in Action (VIA) classification as well as reviews the research on the outcomes of strengths use, as revealed through the extensive research conducted on the topic. The aims of the project were to “reclaim the study of character and virtue as legitimate topics of psychological inquiry”, to build a solid foundations for a science of human strengths, that will enable people to flourish through the cultivation of positive qualities, and to create a common language for describing and discussing these traits. The VIA classification includes 24 character strengths that are clustered into six virtues. The main use of the classification is for assessing individuals’ strengths profile, hence facilitating strength awareness and an optimal use of strengths. The VIA project represents the promise of positive psychology to shift the balance in psychology, and devote attention to good character as an essential key to a full life.
