ABSTRACT

This chapter opens with a review of the definition and components of the meaning in life concept, and highlights the importance of meaning in life for wellbeing and optimal functioning. Meaning in life is a classic topic that predates positive psychology and has been discussed extensively in religious texts, literature and philosophy. An important distinction to make at the outset pertains to the difference between meaning of life and meaning in life. Deep meaning often occurs from commitment to a higher purpose, and hence meaning in life is linked to self-actualisation and self-transcendence. A substantial body of empirical work has demonstrated that high meaning in life is associated with wellbeing as well as with a range of other positive outcomes. Meaning in life has been correlated with happiness, wellbeing, vitality and high morale, sense of control, autonomy, environmental mastery, positive perceptions of the world, religious affiliation and spirituality.
