ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the data from the National Assessment Program of Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and other key indicators of performance in year 12, which is the final year of school education in Queensland. From 2008 to 2013 the Far North region demonstrated a strong improvement trend across year 3, year 5 and year 7 in the results of the NAPLAN in the national minimum standard, mean scale score and upper two bands. A target was set to emphasise the role of schools in maximising the attendance of students. With the right teaching, should expect that students would learn successfully, if they attended school regularly. While the cohort of “all students” in the Far North region improved over the period, the cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students achieved greater improvements. “Closing the gap” was achieved through consistently applying highly effective teaching strategies to all students.
