ABSTRACT

This chapter presents case studies of Malanda State School, Tagai State College, Whitfield State School, and Woree State High School. Malanda State School (MSS) is set in a rural community with an economy that has been associated with the dairy industry for more than 90 years. MSS' Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) is 975. ICSEA values typically range from approximately 500 to about 1,300. Tagai State College's name is anchored on the constellation of Tagai, a symbol that unites the people of the Torres Straits. Tagai State College, like the constellation, is a collection of individual entities that make up the whole. Whitfield State School is a Prep to year 6 school located in the western suburbs of Cairns. The school has an ICSEA score of 970 and has an enrolment of 871 students representing thirty-six different countries. Woree State High School is located in the southern corridor of Cairns and has a student population of 930.
