ABSTRACT

The accent emphasizes one syllable of the word in respect to other syllables. The accented syllable can also be pronounced in various ways: short or long, stressing the beginning or the end of the syllable. It performs a distinctive function: bùtas (Nom. sg. ‘flat, apartment’) and būtas (passive participle, m. ‘~having been’), áušta (sriuba) ‘(soup) is getting cold’ and aũšta (rytas) ‘(morning) dawn breaks’.
