ABSTRACT

A verb is an autonomous part of speech that expresses action or state. Lithuanian verbs have finite and non-finite forms. Finite verb forms are used as predicates. The finite verb forms in Lithuanian are inflected for person (1st, 2nd and 3rd), number (singular and plural), tense (present, past, past frequentative and future) and mood (indicative, subjunctive and imperative). The aspect category in Lithuanian is rather a lexical than a morphological category. The non-finite forms are infinitive, participle, half-participle and gerund. In addition, compound tenses and passive constructions can be formed using the finite forms of the auxiliary būti ‘to be’ with different participles. Some verbs can also be reflexive.
