ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the first Dimension of World Music Pedagogy, Attentive Listening, and also offers practical guidelines for effectively integrating listening activities of all kinds into the choral music classroom. Topics include selecting and presenting listening examples, modeling good listening behavior, planning for success, and curating a playlist of WMP selections. The discussion of strategies for Attentive Listening includes such topics as guided listening questions, listening maps, kinesthetic responses, and the listening party. Seven Episodes featuring Attentive Listening illustrate how these activities might play out in the choral music classroom. The Conductor’s Corner in this chapter features Brazilian choral conductor, composer, and arranger Eduardo Lakschevitz.
