ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the fifth Dimension of World Music Pedagogy, Creating World Music, sharing possibilities for composing, improvising, and arranging diverse music in the choral classroom. Topics include making time and space for creativity, selecting genres for success, structuring activities for success, reimagining lyrics, and choreography as composition. Technology is also discussed as a tool for facilitating composition and improvisation activities that build on prior understandings of diverse musical cultures. Six Episodes provide concrete examples for how these creative music making activities might play out in the choral rehearsal. The Conductor’s Corner in this chapter features choral conductor, composer, and arranger Ethan Sperry.
