ABSTRACT

This chapter examines powerful ways to integrate cultural context into the learning and performance of music drawn from the world’s diverse cultures. Topics include musicians as humans, music as place-based, music transcending place, music in and over time, musical functions, music as a component of other performative genres, and children’s musical cultures. Interdisciplinary collaborations are also featured, highlighting multiple ways to connect music-learning to history, social studies, geography, language arts, foreign languages, dance, film, and visual art. Seven Episodes provide concrete examples for effectively integrating cultural context into the WMP-based choral learning experiences. Considerations for bringing culture bearers into the choral music classroom are also discussed. The Conductor’s Corner in this chapter features choral world music pioneer Mary Goetze.
