ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the broad aims and outcomes of World Music Pedagogy in the choral music education context, connecting the WMP framework to both Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Multicultural Education. The particular challenges inherent in enacting WMP in the choral rehearsal are examined, including issues of time, decentering Western classical music, and understanding cultural appropriation. Social justice through choral music education is discussed and five tenets supporting successful WMP practice are forwarded. The Conductor’s Corner in this chapter features choral conductor, ethnomusicologist, and social justice advocate André de Quadros.
