ABSTRACT

Helping students accept and want critical feedback is essential to getting them ready for college and their careers. Like most things, exposing students to the skills we want them to learn and then giving them many opportunities to practice are the most effective ways of building the skills. It’s kind of like bowling. There are some unusual things about bowling student can directly apply to improving classroom learning, so let’s go bowling for a minute. Imagine student is at a bowling alley. Student are in charge of students own performance, and student get to see the results as a natural consequence. As with any endeavor, if student do it enough, student can often get pretty good at it, which is even more fun. Bowling is one of many learning systems that give participants intrinsic feedback to improve, and feedback is the most important element of formative assessment.
