ABSTRACT

Arriving at teachers' first school can be exciting, daunting, nerve-racking, and intimidating. The thought of finally being in charge of their own group, and the progress of these groups, teachers can provide with a sense of direction, purpose, fulfillment, and perhaps nervousness. If teachers are on a teacher-training course, they should expect that these initial experiences will be carefully supervised. Hopefully, the course will begin with a period of observation to allow teachers to experience the structure of the day, the classroom routine, what is being taught and how learning strategies are being used, how behaviour is being managed, and how assessment is being used and monitored. In terms of training to teach for the school sector, one of the changes under the government has been the proliferation of routes into teaching in schools. During the first year of teaching, the new entrant is described as a ‘Newly Qualified Teacher’.
