ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a background to reforms of the vocational qualification sector. It seeks to unravel some of the complexities and provide teachers with a basis to begin their adventure into this stimulating part of the Business, Economics, and Enterprise curriculum. Every teacher recognises the value of vocational education; it provides the teacher with the opportunity to develop in his/her practice of teaching as well as being able to engage with various theories of learning that can inform, develop, and challenge individual practices. For many students coming into teaching, and specifically into the subject area of Business, Economics, and Enterprise, their route has been through the traditional route of A levels and a degree. Vocational courses provide an excellent pathway for a wide variety of learners. Some learners prefer a more “hands on” approach to learning, in that they prefer to learn through taking part in work–related practical activities while gaining the necessary skills and knowledge for their personal development.
