ABSTRACT

Teaching and learning is a complex activity and both research and experience has shown that for learner learning to be effective then teaching cannot be a case of the teacher doing something at the front of the class and hoping that learners pick up what is being taught. The role of the teacher must be much more reflexive than that - finding out what learners know and what they can do. Implementing Assessment for Learning into teachers' lessons can be a powerful tool for enhancing learner progress within lessons and across a course. The chapter aim is to enable teachers to have a deep understanding of assessment for learning so that they can use this to enable their learners to make good or better progress and to enjoy their learning - and for they to enjoy their teaching. Good teachers have always assessed learner learning and provided constructive feedback to help learners to achieve more.
