ABSTRACT

Children must have their basic needs met if they are to feel safe and comfortable. When children feel safe, they are less likely to be afraid of failure and more likely to risk trying again when they fail. Everyone needs to feel they belong and to know that they are important to someone. When they feel accepted and loved by the important people in their lives, they feel comfortable, safe and secure. If children feel respected and secure within a family, they will find it easier to make friendships outside the family. We are all special and feeling special is an important part of self-esteem. It is important for everyone to discover their own special talents and qualities and research indicates that one of the main factors that contribute to a child developing self-esteem is the presence of at least one adult who helps them to feel appreciated and focuses on their strengths.
