ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an introduction to proprioceptive and vestibular senses, which includes information about how important they are to people lives and why they are worth exploring with Sensory Beings. It looks at the early proprioceptive and vestibular experiences are likely to encounter, and how these can inform choices of starting experiences for exploring proprioception and vestibulation with Sensory Beings. Proprioception and vestibulation help people to know where our body is and where it is going. Imagine for a moment not knowing where body is and how it is moving: how strange that would be, how disorientating, how alarming. Sensory experiences that offer the opportunity to practice relating proprioceptive and vestibular experiences to the real world around us can help us to tune those senses in so that they match up to reality. The manner of these experiences will depend on the physical abilities of the person being supported.
