ABSTRACT
As students become reasonably adept at organizing documents into groups, they can move on to analyzing multiple texts using the SOAPSETone technique. Because DBQs that are about fun and interesting events outside of the curriculum—like favorite teachers, school events, community athletics, or national celebrities—are less intimidating (and more engaging) for students than DBQs related to our standards, I always start off with DBQs that are about topics with which students are familiar and comfortable. For example, I created the following DBQ to help put my students at ease with analyzing and evaluating texts and understanding the relationship between sources. My students really enjoy this DBQ because it is about a topic of interest that is familiar to them.
