ABSTRACT

This chapter tells the story of the beginning of the implementation of growth mindset at Chew Valley School in North Somerset, with a pilot group of Year 11 Science students under the watchful eye of Head of Year Ashley Loynton. The so-called “Biscuit Club” were willing volunteers for an intervention which trialled aspects of research from Carol Dweck, Walter Mischel, and Angela Duckworth in a “live” classroom context. A combination of questionnaires, self-reflection, teacher input, and chocolate biscuits saw the group make substantial strides with their science and with their attitude and approach to learning – enough to convince the author to roll the programme out to the rest of the students and staff in an attempt to become a growth mindset school.
