ABSTRACT

This chapter examines several theories of leadership, arguing in favour of values-driven leadership to successfully implement a growth mindset ethos. It explores the pitfalls of fixed mindset leadership, then proposes a leadership model based on the track cycling discipline of team pursuit. It goes on to challenge the “right people on the bus” model of leadership, arguing instead that the leader should be seen more as a conductor than a driver. It proposes the importance of vulnerability and learning as a leader, before emphasising the importance of trust in leadership – and suggesting how to build and maintain it. Finally, the chapter sets the ideas into context with an outline of the vision and values which underpin the author’s own leadership as Headteacher in a large, rural comprehensive school.
