ABSTRACT

“Boobs” has an adolescent quality to it, that is a little silly, and when spoken by a man performs/cites a specific form of “bro” masculinity. The examination of a case study of MacFarlane and the analysis of “bro camp” will be considered alongside and through the conception of hegemonic masculinity—specifically examining where and how bro camp works to disrupt or trouble the rigidity of this system of meanings. Hegemonic masculinity marks a dominating and oppressive system, where the straight masculine cis “bro” posture works to reify its logics through the denigration of femininity. “Masculinity,” as a performative accomplishment and a system of cultural meanings, is often seen as “authentic, essential, unadorned, and uncontrived”. Reading MacFarlane’s performance of masculinity through a “bro camp” lens, there is little or no insight or revelation by the dozens of articles and responses arguing “sexism.”
