ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how to create solutions using a collaborative student support team (SST) within an alternative high school. It discusses how different disciplines can participate together in a weekly, solution- building conversation and meeting aimed at developing individual solutions for students. Individual students are promptly contacted and brought into the solution focused conversation, where the solutions suggested by the SST may be negotiated further and revisited at the next or subsequent meetings. Some schools are fortunate enough to have school-based services or crisis teams that are equipped to intervene with a student crisis or a serious problem that may arise. Implementation of a collaborative SST within a solution focused alternative school brings together individuals dedicated to providing individualized consideration of each student's unique challenges and needs. The action plan lets staff involved with the student know that the school is working with the student to move forward.
