ABSTRACT

This chapter on mindfulness in secondary years emphasizes the need to individualize activities to suit the strengths, interests and sensitivities of adolescents, who can benefit from engaging and calming activities appropriate to this developmental phase. It focuses on a sensitive and 'spirited' approach to mindfulness for adolescents who sometimes can challenge teachers with both their directedness and their vulnerabilities and so require sensitive attunement from their teachers in terms of relationships and activities. The chapter draws on available information and personal experience in relation to what teachers can do in secondary schools to support vulnerable young people who need adjustments to traditional mindfulness activities. Depending on the age and inclination of secondary students other activities on the primary years can also be effective including 'mindful pauses', being in nature and even some of the 'fun' movement and memory games. 'Still chillen' activity was created by Himelstein who plays on the 'cool factor' by describing stillness and calmness in youthful vernacular.
