ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ontology that lies beyond the different cultural explanations of what is "real", needs to be recognized if there is any hope of educational reforms addressing the deep cultural roots of the ecological crisis. The basic units of organization are the cultural and natural ecological systems, and not the supposed self-forming and self-governing individual, or other autonomous entities such as plants and animals. Scientific studies have shown changes in different ecosystems, such as the melting of the ice on Greenland that has the potential to raise the level of the world's oceans by 20 feet, and the changes in the pH levels of the world's oceans that are limiting the ability of calcifying organisms to reproduce themselves. Moreover, the digital revolution is leading to more algorithms replacing humans in work settings and has made privacy a thing of the past.
