ABSTRACT

Reading and writing are relatively new skills in terms of human evolution. The Simple View of Reading is also a useful framework to consider typical reading ability, as measuring the two general skills of word decoding and linguistic comprehension can predict reading comprehension levels in children to a large degree. Reading the text several times allowed the dyslexic adults to get the main ideas from the text and then use this to support inferring the meaning of words that they could not read/decode. An understanding of the potential types of reading problems predicted by a Simple View of Reading would explain different types of poor readers – and help us determine when dyslexia may focus on decoding problems or when it may be combined with problems understanding text. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
