ABSTRACT
The evaluation of social/emotion instruction is going to be based on a combination of measures. The most prominent index will be an increase in academic learning (AL), as presented and scored by computers. This is because AL is still the preeminent goal of most schools, universally. One of these measurement methods is of particular interest: the open-answer technique and in particular, the "two-string" test. This approach meets the criteria of allowing open-ended typed answers to be identified as correct or incorrect. Many people are unable to reach this solution because they do not imagine mousetraps being used for something other than for catching mice. In fact, one wouldn't even need to make a judgment of the students' answers. One might ask the regular teachers of a group of athletes to rank them on social and emotional learning (SEL). SEL evaluation has come a long way in recent years. If teachers can only get education-controlling leaders to recognize the value of SEL itself.
