“Many of Our Songs Are Maps”

Chapter 5 covers much of the same ground as the previous chapter, but focuses on poetic contributions of the period from Joy Harjo, Wendy Rose, Simon Ortiz, and others. The rise of indigenous poetic voices during the Native American Literary Renaissance brought into view a bold new expression of indigenous place and identity, marking a more self-assured and self-affirming rootedness in Native space.
