ABSTRACT

Challenges faced by international and other culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) undergraduates may be academic, linguistic, cultural, and social in nature. The current approach to student support services in higher education assumes a level of self-sufficiency and awareness of services that many do not have. Coordinated and holistic student support services that are proactive and relational are best suited to respond to the needs of this population. This chapter explores some of the stresses faced by CLD students, such as family expectations, finances, and culture shock, and the factors behind their reluctance to access campus counseling. New resources such as integrated student success centers with appropriate data support in advising and academic advocacy provide proactive and holistic support for student success. By re-examining the notion of remediation, models such as bridge and pathways programs can play important roles in supporting student success.
