ABSTRACT

This chapter offers Ryan Osborne's encouragement and wisdom about the path to being a reporter, a broadcaster, an editor or a media professional. In journalism school, Osborne began to realize he enjoyed telling stories, whether they were those of athletes or not. He covered the TCU athletics but also did an in-depth feature on how the administration was trying to improve campus diversity. He also covered the TCU football team but also wrote about the aftermath of a fertilizer plant explosion in rural Texas. Reporting, context and clarity have always been tenets of journalism, and they always will be. It's why Osborne enjoys being a journalist, being able to tell a story that matters. But he also enjoys being able to maximize who sees his work, and he can control that, to an extent, by navigating social media and understanding digital readers.
