ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on Paul's walk to explore two practices related to slow looking. The first is a practice called slow journalism-a radical alternative to the fast-paced, daily cycle of ever-breaking news. The second is an educational program related to Paul's walk in which young people around the globe practice slow looking in their local neighborhoods and online with each other. On January 10, 2013, journalist and National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek sets out on a slow and very long walk. First there is simply a photo of the place, along with a two- or three-sentence introduction, and the geographic coordinates. Instead, he wanted something that shared the spirit of the walk's philosophy. He asked around about possible partners, and by happy coincidence his trail took him to Project Zero, a research organization at Harvard Graduate School of Education with a long history of innovative educational projects.
