ABSTRACT
Recommendation: We recommend not using norm-referenced grading approaches in college courses but prefer criterion-referenced grading approaches ∗ because they award grades based on how well a student’s performance is compared to an established standard. If you do need to employ a norm-referenced grading approach, use the standard deviation method.
