ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that developing a song in order to extend children's learning, knowledge and understanding of music. It shows that how this song development might work in practice and provides some ideas. When introducing a new song it is important to present it in a manner that both attracts the children's attention and enables accurate memorising of the tune, rhythm and words. The tune of the particular song lends itself to the fabric being raised and lowered according to the shape of the melody–up when singing the higher note, down when singing the lower note–thus making the pitch structure of the song visible. The timbre and texture of songs and rhymes can be altered by extending the activities to include the playing of tuned or untuned instruments. The addition of instrumental accompaniment to songs and rhymes that the children have been working on, and know very well, extends musical and learning experience.
