ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 provides an overview of the current state of major treatments for ADHD. Pharmacotherapies, psychosocial interventions, combined treatments, and several complementary and alternative interventions are reviewed. We provide an update on empirical findings, and we offer a critical view regarding the efficacy of each one and a comparison of their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, we present novel treatment choices and future research directions. Finally, we review recent findings regarding the neuroplasticity of the developing brain in the framework of the bio-psycho-social model of ADHD, and we argue in favor of early intervention that may lead to its secondary prevention.
