ABSTRACT

Sex education is a contentious subject in the field of special education and has only recently been recognized as essential to a curriculum for intellectually disabled learners. This chapter provides an introduction to methods of teaching sexuality and gender identity topics to intellectually disabled people of all ages, including adult learners. The chapter contains an exploration of what topics are considered necessary for intellectually disabled learners, enumerates topics that are of particular interest for special educators, and examines current research on sex education methods and practices. The chapter concludes with a case example on the topic of sex education and several questions for self-reflection.
