ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a discussion for investigating English teachers' attitudes towards and awareness of varieties of English. It outlines research issues, the research sites and the characteristics of participants involved in the study and chosen varieties of English. The varieties of English are three Inner Circle English, American English, Canadian English and British English; two Outer Circle English, Indian English and Singaporean English; and three Expanding Circle English, Chinese English, Japanese English and Korean English. The chapter describes the research design, data collection methods and research instruments. It employs mixed data collection methods with the integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches using a range of direct data-gathering techniques. The data was organised for analysis according to themes and issues that arose relevant to the main research questions. To analyse the quantitative data, a number of statistical techniques were employed.
