ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to research participants' awareness without using the recorded voices generally used in the verbal guise technique or matched guise technique. It suggests that participants' awareness and familiarity with American English (AmE) was overwhelmingly greater than that of other Englishes. The chapter also suggests that the view participants have of English as AmE is simply inaccurate and problematic since they are likely to encounter varieties of English in professional and overseas contexts. Although a majority of the participants acknowledged that there were varieties of English being spoken globally, most of the participants did not demonstrate an awareness of English varieties other than three Inner Circle Englishes mentioned in the questionnaire. The chapter proposes that raising English teachers' awareness of and exposure to other Englishes is an urgent issue. English education has been the main channel for most Korean English teachers who were interviewed to connect with the English language.
