ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a literature review to justify the selection of Indonesia as a developing country for the context of the research. Indonesia matches the characteristics of a developing country appropriate to the context of the study. The country provides lucrative opportunities but also challenges such as poverty, inequality, environmental degradation and weak government. The research reveals that corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Indonesia is still considered as philanthropic contributions rather than strategic corporate actions. The research gaps in the literature show a need to investigate a responsible company that can contribute to sustainable development through CSR programs, and yet survives and thrives in doing business in the country.
