ABSTRACT

Chinese students are often discussed erroneously as a homogenous group, but several of the research participants descend from mixed Chinese parentage and are shaped by a blend of Chinese cultures. Technological networks are shown to accentuate differences between the Mainland students and those from the SARS. Collective, national and personal identities are discussed, as well as diversity in relation to social integration with home students and with Chinese others. Discussion looks at flexible identities and the question of whether individualism can be applied to Chinese students, while gendered attitudes are found inherent in the male students and families.
