ABSTRACT

This chapter offers supplemental materials to assist building insight and promoting self-awareness related to the role of cultural identity in the classroom and as part of the learning process. It includes consideration for the cultural identity of the teacher and the students. Activities will compromise of: reflective exercise to enhance self-awareness related to cultural awareness and macro aggressions; exploring implicit bias; case study and process questions; and guided questions to explore cultural misunderstanding and biases in teaching. Awareness of one's own cultural and diverse identities as well as those of one's students is significant for counselor educators and their development. It is important for counselor educators to incorporate the foundational principles of intersectionality, including privilege and oppression, into their pedagogy. The activity is a reflective journal that counselor education and supervision students and faculty can use as a guide throughout their career.
