ABSTRACT

In this chapter we argue that the project brief (also known as the assignment) realises the creative curriculum. Through an analysis of problem based learning, enquiry based learning and studio based learning, we look at the contribution the project makes to studio pedagogy. Project based approaches to teaching and learning decentre notions of expertise and ownership through the opportunity for students to personalise and build the curriculum. The project may take many forms from highly structured to completely self-determined by the student. In the university sector problem based learning is seen as an innovative approach, but in the Art School this is familiar territory. The chapter draws out conclusions about project based learning that will have relevance to debates about student centred approaches to teaching and learning across the disciplines.
